  • Children who have been adopted from countries with high rates of hepatitis B infection.
  • People who have unprotected sex and/or have been diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection.
  • People who live with or work in an institutional setting, such as prisons or group homes.

Indications Of Herbal Medicine Use

Among patients who used herbal medicine within the last 12months, 34/143 were using it to treat hepatitis while 109/143 were using it for various health conditions which are shown in Fig. .

Fig. 1

Indications of herbal medicine use among hepatitis patients. The 143 patients who reported use of herbal medicine were asked what conditions they were treating with the herbal medicine. The different bars indicate the frequency of reporting of an indication of use of herbal medicine. However, some patients were using herbal medicine for more than one indication and had multiple responses. Common respiratory conditions were the most frequently reported indications followed by hepatitis and other gastrointestinal conditions. This was also confirmed in all the focus groups sessions where patients reported that either they or other patients they knew who had been diagnosed with hepatitis used herbal medicines, not only to treat conditions of the liver but a range of other medical conditions. Twenty-six percent reported using herbal medicine for treatment of respiratory conditions such as cough, asthma and the common cold, 33/143 for gastrointestinal conditions including abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort and diarrhea, 25/143 for malaria, 16/143 for antenatal care and 6/143 for fever.

What Is The Follow

If an individual has acute hepatitis B, a health care practitioner will draw blood and examine the person periodically to see if the infection is resolving. If the person develops chronic hepatitis B, they will need periodic examinations and blood tests on an ongoing basis. If these tests indicate that the virus is actively damaging the liver, the healthcare practitioner may suggest a liver biopsy or begin antiviral therapy. The individual will also be given a vaccine against hepatitis A, which is an unrelated virus that may cause severe liver disease in people who already carry hepatitis B.

Chronic hepatitis B is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma. Fortunately, this is rare cancer. A blood test can be used to detect a marker for this cancer, or cancer can be detected by abdominal ultrasound. Persons with chronic hepatitis B are usually screened periodically for hepatocellular carcinoma, although it is not clear if this screening improves survival.

Can Hepatitis B Be Prevented

CCO Hep B Consult HBV Treatment Guidelines

The hepatitis B vaccine is one of the best ways to control the disease. It is safe, effective and widely available. More than one billion doses of the vaccine have been administered globally since 1982. The World Health Organization says the vaccine is 98-100% effective in guarding against the virus. Newborns should be vaccinated.

The disease has also been more widely prevented thanks to:

  • Widespread global adoption of safe blood-handling practices. WHO says 97% of the blood donated around the world is now screened for HBV and other diseases.
  • Safer blood injection practices, using clean needles.
  • Safe-sex practices.

You can help prevent hepatitis B infections by:

  • Practicing safe sex .
  • Never sharing personal care items like toothbrushes or razors.
  • Getting tattoos or piercings only at shops that employ safe hygiene practices.
  • Not sharing needles to use drugs.
  • Asking your healthcare provider for blood tests to determine if you have HBV or if you are immune.

Screening Of A Kampo Library For Suppression Of Hepatitis B Virus Production

To identify anti-HBV Kampos, the INM Kampo library, containing 42 Kampo extracts, was first checked for cell toxicity. HepAD38.7 cells were treated with Kampo extracts, and cell viability was evaluated after 9 days of Kampo treatment . Among the 42 extracts, 41 resulted in > 80% viability . Then, the extracts without cytotoxicity were screened for their anti-HBV activity. HBV production was induced by removing tetracycline, and simultaneously, the cells were treated with or without Kampo extracts to evaluate the anti-HBV activity. Four of the 41 extracts suppressed extracellular HBV production in HepAD38.7 cells by > 25% . Since the maoto extract suppressed HBV production the most , we focused on the maoto extract for further investigation.

Hepatitis B Vs Hepatitis C

Hepatitis has many different types. HBV and the hepatitis C virus have both acute and chronic forms.

The main difference between HBV and HCV is how they spread from person to person. Although HCV is transmissible via sexual activity, this is rare. HCV usually spreads when blood that carries the virus comes into contact with blood that does not.

What Are The Types Of Hepatitis B

There are two types of hepatitis B infection: acute and chronic.

Acute

An acute infection happens at the beginning, when you first get infected with hepatitis B. Many people are able to clear it from their bodies and recover. In fact, this is true of about 4 in 5 adults who are infected.

Chronic

If you are not able to clear the infection within six months or longer, you have chronic hepatitis B. It is chronic hepatitis B that leads to inflammation and the serious, and possibly fatal, illnesses of cirrhosis of the liver and liver cancer. Treatment can slow disease progress, reduce the chance of liver cancer and increase your chances of surviving.

Study Design And Setting

The study was conducted within the gastroenterology clinic of Mulago hospital, a tertiary teaching and National Referral Hospital, in Kampala which handles up to 100 adult patients weekly on average with either luminal gastrointestinal issues or liver/pancreatic conditions. The study specifically targeted patients who had a known diagnosis of liver inflammation due to different causes such as hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, drug-induced and alcohol-induced inflammation as shown on their medical records. Data was collected using standardized questionnaires followed by focus group discussions on a sample of patients. The questionnaires used were modified from the International Questionnaire to Measure Use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine .

Diagnosis Of Hepatitis B

Treatment for hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is diagnosed by the presence of Hepatitis B surface antigen and IgM antibody to Hepatitis B core antigen which develop in the serum in the early stages of infection at the time symptoms appear. Antibody to HBsAg develops after active infection and serves as an indicator of immunity.

Anti-HBs + – the individual has been vaccinated, has received immune globulin, is immune, or is an infant who has received antibodies from his/her mother. Anti-HBc + – indicates a past or present infection and lasts indefinitely.

May be detected in an infant who has received antibodies from its mother. IgM anti-HBc + – indicates recent infection with HBV, usually within 4-6 months. HBeAg + – indicates active viral replication and high infectivity. HBsAg + HBV – acute or chronic HBV persistence for 6 months after acute infection indicates progression to chronic HBV.

HBV enveloped particles were purified by equilibrium centrifugation in cesium chloride density gradients. Briefly, 500 µl of culture supernatant was layered onto CsCl gradients and centrifuged for 20 h in a SW40 rotor at 50,000 rpm. The resultant fractions were collected from the top of the tube. The fractions containing both HBsAg and HBV DNA were considered as Dane particle fractions.

A liver transplant is considered necessary when the liver is damaged and cannot function or in some cases of liver cancer. Your liver is very important. It is responsible for many functions related to making sure that your body stays healthy and is able to digest foods.

You may be eligible for a transplant if you have chronic hepatitis B infection or some of the diseases that may result from it, including liver cancer and cirrhosis. You will have to complete testing and be evaluated before being approved for a transplant. It is likely that you will be placed on a waiting list while an appropriate organ is found.

Donated livers come from two types of donors: living and deceased. Because the liver can regenerate, it is possible to use part of a liver for transplant. The remaining sections in both the donor and the receiver will grow into livers of adequate size.

People who get liver transplants must take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their lives. These drugs make you more susceptible to infection. However, liver transplants have become more successful over time and continue to improve.
