Treatment of Hepatitis B 2019: Easy to Treat, Hard to Understand!

Theres no cure for hepatitis B. The good news is it usually goes away by itself in 4 to 8 weeks. More than 9 out of 10 adults who get hepatitis B totally recover.

However, about 1 in 20 people who get hepatitis B as adults become carriers, which means they have a chronic hepatitis B infection. Carriers are more likely to pass hepatitis B to other people. Most carriers are contagious meaning they can spread hepatitis B for the rest of their lives.

Hepatitis B infections that last a long time may lead to serious liver diseases like cirrhosis and liver cancer. About 1 in 5 people with chronic hepatitis B die from it. There are medicines that can help treat chronic hepatitis B infections.

Most babies who get hepatitis B during birth develop chronic infection, unless they get treated right away. But treatments are almost always effective if your baby gets them quickly. Thats why its important for pregnant people to get tested for hepatitis B.

    Hepatitis B Signs And Symptoms

Most people with acute hepatitis B experience no symptoms. But some, especially adults and children over the age of 5, develop symptoms that can last for several weeks. Approximately one-third of adults with acute HBV will experience symptoms. They usually develop two to five months after exposure to the virus. The most common symptoms of acute hepatitis B include:

Symptoms of hepatitis B usually last a few weeks. But people can experience symptoms for as long as six months. People with chronic hepatitis B are unable to clear the virus. They may experience ongoing symptoms or live symptom-free for many years. The likelihood of the infection becoming a chronic condition depends on the age at which a person is infected. Children infected with the virus before the age of six are more likely to develop chronic hepatitis B. Research shows that 80 percent to 90 percent of infants infected with hepatitis B during their first year of life will go on to develop chronic infections. And 30 percent to 50 percent of children infected before the age of 6 will develop chronic hepatitis B. This is compared to less than 5 percent of otherwise healthy adults who develop a chronic infection.

    Who Are Hepatitis B Carriers

Between 6% and 10% of those people whove been infected with the virus will become carriers and can infect others without knowing it. There are over 250 million people in the world who are carriers of HBV, with about 10% to 15% of the total located in India. Children are at the highest risk of becoming carriers. About 9 in 10 babies infected at birth become HBV carriers, and about half of children who are infected between birth and age 5 carry the virus. A blood test can tell you if you are a hepatitis B carrier.

At 7 days post-transfection, the culture supernatant was used to measure the level of HBV production by real-time PCR, and cell lysates were used to check the transfection efficiency by a Luciferase Assay System .

    What Causes Hepatitis A

The cause of hepatitis A is hepatitis A virus that is transmitted person to person by contaminated foods, water or other drinks , blood, stool, and direct contact. The virus is a Picornavirus that contains single-stranded RNA as its genome covered by a protein shell. The virus enters through the epithelium in the mouth or gut and migrates to the liver over a period of about two to six weeks. Symptoms then begin to develop as the virus replicates in the liver cells . HAV reproduces itself by utilizing the liver cells’ ribosomes for viral replication however this interferes with normal liver cell function. If large numbers of liver cells are infected with HAV, the person will develop symptoms. The viruses are secreted into the GI tract by the bile fluid made in the liver. The majority of people infected recover with no lasting damage to the liver.

    Diagnosis Of Hepatitis B

Hepatitis B is diagnosed by the presence of Hepatitis B surface antigen and IgM antibody to Hepatitis B core antigen which develop in the serum in the early stages of infection at the time symptoms appear. Antibody to HBsAg develops after active infection and serves as an indicator of immunity.

Anti-HBs + – the individual has been vaccinated, has received immune globulin, is immune, or is an infant who has received antibodies from his/her mother. Anti-HBc + – indicates a past or present infection and lasts indefinitely.

May be detected in an infant who has received antibodies from its mother. IgM anti-HBc + – indicates recent infection with HBV, usually within 4-6 months. HBeAg + – indicates active viral replication and high infectivity. HBsAg + HBV – acute or chronic HBV persistence for 6 months after acute infection indicates progression to chronic HBV.

Natural Remedies That Wont Cure Your Hepatitis C

With new drugs that are too expensive and old ones with severe side effects, some people are looking into alternative treatments.

While drugs to treat a viral hepatitis C infection of the liver are better now than ever, because of their cost, they remain out of reach for many.

The new medications Sovaldi , Olysio , Harvoni , and Viekira Pak are highly effective. But one 12-week course can cost more than $94,000. This is a problem for people with and without insurance, because some insurance companies wont pay, says Nikroo Hashemi, MD, a hepatologist at Brigham and Womens Hospital in Boston.

Some people who cant afford the newer medications may use the older-generation treatment a combination of pegylated interferon and the antiviral drug ribavirin but its much less effective than the newer drugs. Interferon often comes with a host of difficult side effects, like anemia, kidney failure, and fatigue, Hashemi says.

For these reasons, many people with hepatitis C turn to alternative treatments.

When considering alternative treatments like herbs, vitamins, teas, or yoga for hepatitis C, its totally reasonable to look into all of these, but they should be assessed carefully, says Christopher Moore, MD, a hepatologist and assistant professor in gastroenterology at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago.

Heres a rundown of things you should know about five types of popular non-traditional therapies for hepatitis C.

Hepatitis B: Treatment and care for a chronic condition

    By Christine Ruggeri, CHHC

It is estimated that over 300 million people are living with hepatitis B. In 2015, it resulted in 887,000 deaths worldwide. Although many people with hepatitis B dont experience any symptoms, its a chronic infection that can lead to severe liver conditions like cirrhosisand liver cancer. The scary part is that it is 50100 times more infectious than HIV. An even scarier note: coinfection with hepatitis B and HIV is common. Seventy to 90 percent of people with HIV in the U.S. show evidence of past or active HBV infections. HBV is also more infectious than hepatitis C. Both hepatitis B and C are transmitted through infected blood, but hepatitis A is transmitted through infected fecal matter. The virus can live outside of the body for many days and infect you unknowingly. Thats why people at risk of acquiring hepatitis B should be screened. That way those infected can limit the spread of the virus.

There is no cure for hepatitis B, but there are natural ways to support your immune system and reduce your risk of developing a chronic infection. There are also remedies for relieving the symptoms of acute hepatitis B, which for some people can last for months.

What Is Involved In A Liver Transplant

A liver transplant is considered necessary when the liver is damaged and cannot function or in some cases of liver cancer. Your liver is very important. It is responsible for many functions related to making sure that your body stays healthy and is able to digest foods.

You may be eligible for a transplant if you have chronic hepatitis B infection or some of the diseases that may result from it, including liver cancer and cirrhosis. You will have to complete testing and be evaluated before being approved for a transplant. It is likely that you will be placed on a waiting list while an appropriate organ is found.

Donated livers come from two types of donors: living and deceased. Because the liver can regenerate, it is possible to use part of a liver for transplant. The remaining sections in both the donor and the receiver will grow into livers of adequate size.

People who get liver transplants must take anti-rejection drugs for the rest of their lives. These drugs make you more susceptible to infection. However, liver transplants have become more successful over time and continue to improve.

Factors Associated With Herbal Medicine Use

The following variables were significantly associated with herbal medicine use: education status, duration of illness, current diagnosis, belief that herbal treatment is completely safe and a belief that concurrent use of herbal and conventional treatment is safe as shown in Table .

Table 3 Factors associated with the use of herbal medicine among patients diagnosed with hepatitis

The patients who had attained any form of education were less likely to use herbal medicine compared to those who were not educated however on adjusting for other factors, the education status was not found to be a significant factor in determining herbal medicine use.

Patients who had been diagnosed with hepatitis for a duration greater than 1year between 13 and 24months longer than 24months before the study were also found to be less likely to use herbal therapies compared to those who had been diagnosed with hepatitis for a duration of less than 1year before adjusting for other factors.

There was also a significant difference in the use of herbal medicine according to the type of hepatitis with which patients had been diagnosed. Patients who were diagnosed with hepatitis C and those diagnosed with other forms of hepatitis including alcoholic hepatitis and drug-induced hepatitis were more likely to use herbal therapies compared to those who were diagnosed with hepatitis B before adjusting for other factors.

Screening Of A Kampo Library For Suppression Of Hepatitis B Virus Production

Natural Herbal Formula to Cure Liver Diseases, Prevent ...

To identify anti-HBV Kampos, the INM Kampo library, containing 42 Kampo extracts, was first checked for cell toxicity. HepAD38.7 cells were treated with Kampo extracts, and cell viability was evaluated after 9 days of Kampo treatment . Among the 42 extracts, 41 resulted in > 80% viability . Then, the extracts without cytotoxicity were screened for their anti-HBV activity. HBV production was induced by removing tetracycline, and simultaneously, the cells were treated with or without Kampo extracts to evaluate the anti-HBV activity. Four of the 41 extracts suppressed extracellular HBV production in HepAD38.7 cells by > 25% . Since the maoto extract suppressed HBV production the most , we focused on the maoto extract for further investigation.
