Hepatitis C And Injecting Drugs

update for my Hep C treatment results/side effects

If you inject drugs, avoid sharing needles, syringes or other equipment such as tourniquets, spoons, swabs or water.

Where possible, always use sterile needles and syringes. These are available free of charge from needle and syringe programs and some pharmacists. To find out where you can obtain free needles, syringes and other injecting equipment, contact DirectLine

Try to wash your hands before and after injecting. If you cant do this, use hand sanitiser or alcohol swabs from a needle and syringe program service.

Alopecia Universalis Following Interferon Alfa

Numerous cutaneous side effects of combination pegylated interferon alfa-2b and ribavirin therapy have been reported.1 These commonly include local reactions at the injection site, development of worsening lichen planus, psoriasis, and vitiligo.13 Hair disorders that have been described in association with PEG-IFN/RBV treatment include canities, hypertrichosis, telogen effluvium, and the most common cutaneous side effect by far, alopecia.24 We report a case of alopecia universalis , or alopecia encompassing the whole body, due to PEG-IFN/RBV combination therapy in a woman infected with hepatitis C . Hair regrowth was seen 1 year after the discontinuation of PEG-IFN/RBV treatment. Although cases of telogen effluvium and alopecia areata associated with PEG-IFN/RBV therapy have been reported in the literature, AU has not yet been reported in the United States in relation to PEG-IFN/RBV treatment.

Does Stopping Epclusa Cause Withdrawal Symptoms

Epclusa hasnt caused withdrawal symptoms in people in clinical studies. Withdrawal refers to symptoms that occur when you stop taking a drug that you are dependent on.

There have been reports of people having flu-like symptoms after treatment with Epclusa. These symptoms include fatigue, muscle aches, and headache. However, its more likely that these side effects would be caused by your recovery from the hepatitis C virus.

If you have flu-like symptoms after you finish your Epclusa treatment, talk with your doctor.

Signs And Symptoms Of Hepatitis C

How to Stop Hair Loss from Stress and Illness

People with acute hepatitis C infection usually dont have symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they typically develop within two to twelve weeks of becoming infected.1 Symptoms may include:

    • Fever
    • Joint pain
    • Jaundice

Its important to know that you can spread the infection to someone else even if you have no symptoms.

    Dermatomyositis Causes A Skin Rash

Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory disease that causes a skin rash on the face and eyelids, as well as on the shoulders, upper chest, and back, and around the knuckles. Other symptoms include muscle weakness, shortness of breath, and trouble swallowing. It is most common in children between ages five and 15 and in adults between ages 40 and 60.

The autoimmune disorder is treated with immunosuppressants and corticosteroids. In children, the symptoms often go away completely. Adults need to be more careful as this may be a sign of another underlying disease and could develop pneumonia or lung failure, which can be fatal in some cases.

Hair Loss As A Medication Side Effect

In the past, HIV medications commonly resulted in hair loss. But newer HIV drugs known as antiretroviral therapy do not usually lead to thinning hair. ART typically causes fewer side effects overall and can prevent the symptoms, progression, and transmission of HIV.

However, other medications that people with HIV may need to take for co-occurring conditions may result in hair loss. For example, acyclovir for genital herpes lists hair loss as a side effect.

People who experience side effects from any medicines should discuss their concerns with a doctor. Often, the benefits of taking the medication outweigh the discomfort of side effects, but a doctor may also be able to prescribe an alternative.

HIV symptoms differ from person-to-person and between phases of the infection. In general, symptoms of the three phases may include:

How Long Will Epclusa Take To Get Rid Of My Hepatitis C

Epclusa will start working right away, but it will take several weeks to a few months to achieve a sustained virologic response . Achieving SVR means that the virus is no longer detectable in your body.

Youll take Epclusa for 12 weeks, and 12 weeks after you finish treatment, your doctor will test your blood. At this time, SVR is achieved in most cases. This means that your hepatitis C infection is unlikely to cause noticeable symptoms and is considered cured.

How Does Hepatitis C Virus Affect Your Integumentary System

The Truth about Hepatitis C Treatment long term Side Effects

The integumentary system defines your skin, hair, and nails. It may surprise you to know that hepatitis C also has an impact on your integumentary system. Hepatitis C can cause a variety of skin problems, including loss of skin pigment, rashes on the skin, itching, and easy bruising due to problems with blood clotting.

HCV can even cause jaundice, causing your skin to appear yellow. This happens because the damaged liver has an impact on bilirubin, which is produced by the breakdown of hemoglobin. When the liver is damaged, it is unable to function properly, causing a buildup of bilirubin inside the body. This causes jaundice. Even the whites of your eyes can turn yellow.

A damaged liver also has an impact on your nutrition as you have no appetite to want to eat. Poor nutrition in turns affects the growth of your nails and hair as well.

    Hepatitis C And Hemophilia

New developments in the understanding and treatment of hepatitis C are important for the bleeding disorders community. As many as 80% of people receiving factor products to treat hemophilia prior to 1992 were infected with hepatitis C virus.

In 2009, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention summarized in its Universal Data Collection Project National Report that there were 6,513 people with bleeding disorders and HCV6,196 with hemophilia, 317 with von Willebrand disease. With the implementation of hepatitis C testing in 1992, as well as other improvements in donor screening and product safety, the risk of HCV transmission from plasma-derived clotting factor has been greatly reduced. No seroconversions to HCV have been reported with any of the FVIII products currently marketed in the U.S.

But once infected, the course of this disease varies greatly from one person to the next. It can run the gamut from spontaneous remission to extensive scarring of the liver and, in some cases, death.

The progression from minimal fibrosis to symptomatic cirrhosis , an indication of end-stage liver disease may be slowed. In a study published in Haemophilia in March 2009, Ragni and colleagues showed that the use of highly activated antiretroviral therapy in men with hemophilia and HIV/HCV co-infection delayed onset of ESLD for 30.3 years compared with 20 years in the control group. The rate for developing ESLD was comparable to what men who were HIV negative experienced.

How Do You Test For Hepatitis A

If youve been in contact with someone who has had hepatitis A, are at risk of getting hepatitis A, or if you start to have symptoms its a good idea to talk to a healthcare professional. A simple blood test will show whether you have the virus.

If you test positive, they may also do another type of blood test to check if your liver is working properly. You should also be tested for other STIs.

Its important that you tell people you live with or have close contact with, and your recent sexual partner/s so they can also get tested. Many people who have hepatitis A dont notice anything wrong, and by telling those youre in close contact with you can help to stop the virus being passed on.

How Can Viral Hepatitis Be Prevented

Proper hygiene is the key to preventing the spread of many diseases, including hepatitis. Other preventive measures include:

    • Vaccinations. Vaccinations are available for hepatitis A and B.
    • Blood transfusion. Blood transfusions are routinely screened for hepatitis B and C to reduce the risk of infection.
    • Antibody preparation. If a person has been exposed to hepatitis A or B, an antibody preparation can be administered to help protect them from contracting the disease.

I also am using this drug for the same reason. In the 2nd week I began to experience hair loss. The amount is noticeably higher than usual. I have been researching this possible side effect but you are the first related info I have came across. If this keeps up I will be shopping for a wig.

    +2Happy4now

Dont worry, your hair should come back once you finish your treatment. I know that its hard to see your hair falling out while on my treatment I lost a lot of my hair. I was embarrassed to go out but it all grew back. My treatment was for a year, at least your treatment is short termed so dont be discouraged. Its a small price to pay and your hair will grow back. I cut my hair short for the time being.. Keep your eye on the price!

Thanks Happy4now this gives me a lift knowing others have their hair regrow.

    Happy4now

For sure! Meanwhile I bought a colored powder which matched my hair color to put on my scalp so it wouldnt be so noticeable. I bought it at the beauty supply shop but I also contemplated a wig. Hang in there youll be done before you know it and your hair will be as pretty and full as before you started treatment. Regards..

I completed my Harvoni treatment in June. It is now the end of September and still losing hair. How long after treatment stops should hair loss stop?

Hepatitis C And Liver Cancer: What To Know

Several viruses besides HPV have been linked to cancer, includinghepatitis C, which is linked to liver cancer.

If you think HPV is the only virus that causes cancer, think again. Several other viruses have been linked to cancer, including hepatitis C.

Hepatitis C is the most common blood-borne infection in the United States. Its also the leading cause of liver cancer.

About 30 percent of people who get exposed to the hepatitis C virus will clear it on their own. The rest will go on to have chronic hepatitis C.

This ongoing infection causes inflammation in the liver. This extended inflammation can cause scarring, called cirrhosis, and can ultimately lead to liver cancer.

Chronic hepatitis C also increases the risk of non-Hodgkin lymphoma and head and neck cancers.

Unlike hepatitis A and B, there is no vaccine against hepatitis C, and there are few if any symptoms, says Harrys Torres, M.D., associate professor of Infectious Diseases.

Its a silent infection, he says. And its a very clever virus that mutates very fast, so it has been difficult to develop a vaccine.

Knowing the risk factors and getting screened are your best defenses against cancers caused by hepatitis C. Treatment of this virus can reduce your risk of liver cancer by 75%.

    Risk factors

About 75% of those infected with hepatitis C in the United States are baby boomers people born between 1945 and 1965.

Other risk factors for hepatitis C infection include:

The majority of people who have been infected with HCV go for a quite long time before knowing that they have it. This is because there often are not any symptoms for several years. By the time people notice any changes on their skin that is the sign the HCV has damaged the liver already. Hepatitis C has been known as the silent disease.

That is due to there is harm going on the inside as well as you dont have any idea. You might not even look like you are sick and that is why you should undergo regular check-ups so that, if diagnosed, you can get a proper Hepatitis C treatment.

The healthy liver breaks down the toxins in the cells as well as supports the body to remove them. While your liver gets compromised from Hepatitis C, the virus, or from the impacts of treating HCV, the toxins build-up in the tissues of your body, the nutrients have a tough time reaching the cells, as well as inflammation can take place. Lack of nutrients, inflammation, and excessive toxins can cause hair, nails, and skin problems from hepatitis C.

How Does Hepatitis C Virus Affect Your Digestive System

Perhaps one of the first systems of the body to get affected by HCV is your digestive system. The liver supports the healthy functioning of many other systems in the body, particularly the digestive system. A major function of the liver is to manufacture bile, a product that is required for the breakdown of fats in the body. Bile is stored in the gallbladder and then sent to the beginning part of the small intestines when it is required.

HCV has a direct impact on the livers ability to manufacture bile. When the bile production is interrupted, it becomes difficult for the body to digest any type of fatty foods. This may also cause you to feel pain throughout your abdomen because of the fluid buildup in the stomach. This condition is known as ascites. Ascites occurs when the damaged liver is unable to manufacture sufficient quantities of albumin, a product that is required for regulating the amount of fluid present in the cells.

Apart from this, HCV may also cause the following symptoms of the digestive system:

    • Weight loss
    • Clay-colored or pale stools

In certain cases, HCV can also cause your gallbladder to become inflamed, causing severe pain. This happens only in the acute stage of the disease and in extremely rare cases only.
