Acute hepatitis C is used to describe a new infection it typically occurs within six months of exposure to the virus.
Chronic hepatitis C may last throughout a patients entire lifetime. This infection could result in scarring, cancer, or damage of the liver. In some cases, chronic hepatitis C may even result in death.
Negotiating Price Reductions And Using Domestic Financing To Kickstart The Hcv Response
To kickstart the plan, Nasarawa state leveraged domestic funding and with CHAI support optimized this funding for screening and treating people. The government procured 7,000 screening kits, 700 viral load tests, and 320 treatment courses. Additionally, the TWG requested and received additional donations of 7,000 screening kits from Healthline pharmaceuticals, a local distributor company supporting HCV elimination.
With the support of partners such as the World Hepatitis Alliance and CHAI, Nasarawa state negotiated with Viatris to reduce the price of a 12-week treatment course from US$135 to US$60, setting a new global benchmark. These negotiated prices have reduced the estimated cost to reach elimination in the next four years by 24 percent.
Nasarawa State is currently prioritizing the HIV/HCV co-infected population which it considers low-hanging fruit to catalyze its elimination efforts said Dr. Ibrahim Adamu, Director Public Health, Nasarawa State Ministry of Health.

How Do People Get Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C virus is found in the blood of people with HCV infection. It enters the body through blood-to-blood contact.
Until reliable blood tests for HCV were developed , people usually got hepatitis C from blood products and blood transfusions. Now that blood and blood products are tested for HCV, this is no longer the typical means of infection.
Currently, people usually get hepatitis C by sharing needles for injection drug use. An HCV-infected woman can pass the infection to her baby during birth. It is also possible to get hepatitis C from an infected person through sexual contact, an accidental needlestick with a contaminated needle, or improperly sterilized medical, acupuncture, piercing, or tattooing equipment.

Zidovudine Alone Is Not Recommended Prophylaxis
EDITORGamester et al found that only 34% of students visiting a country with a high prevalence of HIV purchased zidovudine, probably because of the cost . They recommended that medical schools should consider paying for the drug.1

Hepatitis C And Blood Spills
When cleaning and removing blood spills, use standard infection control precautions at all times:
- Cover any cuts or wounds with a waterproof dressing.
- Wear single-use gloves and use paper towel to mop up blood spills.
- Clean the area with warm water and detergent, then rinse and dry.
- Place used gloves and paper towels into a plastic bag, then seal and dispose of them in a rubbish bin.
- Wash your hands in warm, soapy water then dry them thoroughly.
- Put bloodstained tissues, sanitary towels or dressings in a plastic bag before throwing them away.
Are Hepatitis B And C Preventable
Hepatitis B is a vaccine-preventable disease.
There is a three-shot vaccination series that is very effective in protecting people against the virus if theyre exposed. In the United States, all newborns are vaccinated for hepatitis B and all pregnant women are screened for hepatitis B during pregnancy. This way, mothers infected with hepatitis B can take protective steps to decrease the risk of transmission of the virus to the child.
There is no vaccine for hepatitis C.

Who Should Get Tested
You should consider getting tested for hepatitis C if you’re worried you could have been infected or you fall into one of the groups at an increased risk of being infected.
- Hepatitis C often has no symptoms, so you may still be infected if you feel healthy.
- The following groups of people are at an increased risk of hepatitis C:
- ex-drug users and current drug users, particularly users of injected drugs
- people who received blood transfusions before September 1991
- recipients of organ or tissue transplants before 1992
- people who have lived or had medical treatment in an area where hepatitis C is common high risk areas include North Africa, the Middle East and Central and East Asia
- babies and children whose mothers have hepatitis C
- anyone accidentally exposed to the virus, such as health workers
- people who have received a tattoo or piercing where equipment may not have been properly sterilised
- sexual partners of people with hepatitis C
If you continue to engage in high-risk activities, such as injecting drugs frequently, regular testing may be recommended. Your doctor will be able to advise you about this.

Achieving Waskos overall goals will be easier said than done. While hepatitis C is curable with a roughly 12-week course of a once-daily pill, correctional systems larger and more well resourced than South Dakota have struggled to make such dramatic inroads in such short timelines and there are a number of stumbling blocks South Dakota will have to contend with along the way.
First, the state does not have a true picture of how many people in its care actually are infected with the virus because it hasnt been testing everyone. The Department of Corrections currently knows of nearly 400 people with the virus, but Wasko acknowledged that the number of people known to have the infection is likely to grow as the state begins testing more and more.

Oversight In The United States
In the United States, working with primary human tissues requires compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administrations Bloodborne Pathogens Standard.15 Bloodborne pathogens are defined as infectious microorganisms present in blood that can cause disease in humans and other potentially infectious materials . These pathogens include, but are not limited to, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, and human immunodeficiency virus. Workers exposed to bloodborne pathogens are at risk for serious or life-threatening illnesses . An overview of the regulatory requirements is outlined in Fig. 1.2 and detailed in the following discussion.

Hepatitis C often doesn’t have any noticeable symptoms until the liver has been significantly damaged. This means many people have the infection without realising it.
When symptoms do occur, they can be mistaken for another condition. Symptoms can include:

Integration Is Essential In Providing Patient
Program integration is the bedrock of Nasarawas journey to HCV elimination. The Nasarawa State Elimination program is employing a model that ensures easy access by communities in need. These include:
- Timely testing to ensure patients know their status and are initiated on treatment as soon as possible.
- Integrating HCV testing on seven out of 19 GeneXpert devices used for tuberculosis testing in the state.
- Leveraging existing tuberculosis sample transportation networks to ensure that patients do not have to travel or wait for long turnaround times to know their status.
- Implementing multi-month dispensing to minimize loss-to-follow-up meaning that all patients are successfully linked to care and complete their treatment doses while minimizing multiple facility visits.
A patient recently commented that when I tested positive for hepatitis, I was worried because I could not afford the treatment. Thanks to the Nasarawa state government for providing free hepatitis services.

Differences Between Hepatitis A B And C
To recap, hepatitis means inflammation of the liver, and when its followed by A, B or C, it refers to three different viruses that can cause this inflammation. You are more likely to get hepatitis C if you:
- Have injected drugs
If you have chronic hepatitis C, you probably will not have symptoms until it causes complications. This can happen decades after you were infected. For this reason, hepatitis C screening is important, even if you have no symptoms.
Can Hepatitis C Be Treated
Yes, since 2010 enormous progress has been made in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C. New therapies called direct-acting antivirals are pills that act on the virus itself to eradicate it from the body, unlike older medicines like interferon injections which work by stimulating an immune response. These new treatments are very effective and can achieve cure rates of over 90%. In most situations now, there is no need for interferon, which was responsible for many of the side effects previously associated with HCV treatment. The new treatment combinations require shorter treatment durations , have reduced side effects and appear to be effective at all stages of the disease.
Because these new therapies are very new, they remain very expensive. As such, drug coverage from both government and private companies may require that your liver disease has progressed to a certain stage before they are willing to cover the cost of these drugs.
Your primary care physician may refer you to a specialist to determine whether you are eligible for treatment. A specialist will help you decide which drug therapy is best for you based on the severity of your liver disease, your virus genotype and whether or not you have been treated in the past.

How Long Can Hep C Lay Dormant
Millions of people who are infected do not. Although she has been carrying the virus in her blood for 40 years, she is only now beginning to notice symptoms, including headache, fatigue, and joint pain. Is There A Cure
Though there is no vaccine for Hepatitis C, treatments can reduce the viral load to undetectable levels which is considered cured or in remission.
The virus is considered cured when it is not detected in your blood 12 weeks after treatment is completed. This is otherwise known as a sustained virologic response .
Hepatitis C is one of the most serious hepatitis viruses. However, with newer treatments developed over the past few years, the virus is much more manageable than it was in the past.
Current antiviral drugs that help cure hepatitis C may also help prevent the health complications of chronic liver disease.
The reports less than half of people who contract the hepatitis C virus may clear it from their bodies without treatment. For this group of people, the virus will be a short-term acute condition that goes away without treatment.
But for most people, acute hepatitis C will likely develop into a chronic condition that requires treatment.
Since the virus often doesnt produce symptoms until after more significant liver damage occurs, its important to get tested for hepatitis C if you think you might have been exposed.

Plan Wisely Test Smart Cure
Nigeria has approximately 2.2 million people living with HCV, which is about one percent of the total population. However, states in the North Central region such as Nasarawa have double-digit HCV prevalence rates much higher than the national average.
States such as Nasarawa face multiple yet connected challenges in addressing the viral hepatitis burden. There is a lack of awareness of the disease, unavailability of HCV diagnostic infrastructure and treatment services, and high costs required for patients to access these services.
In response to these challenges, the Nasarawa State Government officially committed to the elimination of HCV in 2020 and announced a five-year strategic plan to screen 2.5 million and treat 141,000 people by 2025. A Technical Working Group was inaugurated to drive the implementation of this plan.

Are Alternative Medicines Available
Some people believe certain forms of alternative medicine help cure hepatitis C.
However, the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that there are no effective, research-proven forms of alternative treatment or complementary medicine for hepatitis C.
Silymarin, also known as milk thistle, is an herb commonly suggested to help cure hepatitis C liver disease. But a rigorous did not find any beneficial effects from this supplement.
How Many People Have Hepatitis C
During 2013-2016 it was estimated that about two and half million people were chronically infected with HCV in the United States. The actual number may be as low as 2.0 million or as high as 2.8 million.Globally, hepatitis C is a common blood-borne infection with an estimated 58 million people chronically infected according to the World Health Organization.

A spokesperson for the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services told STAT the department is updating the consent form. They said similar before STATs report published.
Other lawmakers and advocacy groups in Nebraska are raising alarms over the prison systems lackluster progress treating hepatitis C. The state treated just nine people for the virus in 2021, STAT reported just over 3% of the people it knew to carry the virus.
This is shocking to me, said Sen. Wendy DeBoer, a Democrat who serves on the states Judiciary Committee. DeBoer told STAT she was unaware of the hepatitis C issue prior to STATs reporting.
This is something that just somehow fell through the cracks, said DeBoer, who pledged that the legislature would look into the issue.
Sen. Terrell McKinney, a Democrat who also serves on the Judiciary Committee, pledged in an interview to bring the issue up directly with leadership of the corrections department once a new commissioner is named.
Theres no reason that this should be happening, said McKinney. Its definitely not acceptable.
The ACLU of Nebraska, which STATs findings unacceptable and inhumane, is also considering litigation to force the state to ramp up treatment.
We dont have the complaint drafted or anything like that, but were definitely not taking that off the table at this point, said Mindy Rush Chipman, the Nebraska ACLU interim executive director.
