Do You Value Your Life

Celina Teao does not have hepatitis B but she knows first-hand the importance of being tested and vaccinated, particularly for Pacific Islanders. As a grandmother of seven boys, she says she has watched and been actively involved in ensuring their required vaccinations are on target.

This is so important to our Pacific Island people, as we are prone to diseases such as hepatitis B. Although there is no known cure, early detection, treatment and protection of these diseases are far greater than anything you would wish for in your lifetime and for the future generation.

Do you value your life?

Born in Rarotonga in the late 60s, Celina attended a Catholic school where she says health, hygiene and well-being was taught at primary age. Education and re-enforcement of vaccinations including hepatitis B was a priority. We were given oral medication and they watched us consume it all. If you had a scar on your left upper arm, it meant you toughened the needle for immunisation. It highlighted the fact that we needed to be part of the vaccination programme to prevent illness of such diseases later in life.

it was a very easy and simple process.

“Do we as a community provide enough awareness about the test, times and venues? I know the basics but theres a lot more to learn,” she says.

“Im happy to reveal my test result came back negative for hepatitis B. I will most certainly be encouraging my immediate family and those around me to take this test.”

Hepatitis B In The United States

How I Cured Myself of Hepatitis B

In the United States, about 862,000 people have chronic hepatitis B.6 Asian Americans and African Americans have higher rates of chronic hepatitis B than other U.S. racial and ethnic groups.10 Researchers estimate that about half of the people living with chronic hepatitis B in the United States are Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.11 Chronic hepatitis B is also more common among people born in other countries than among those born in the United States.7

The hepatitis B vaccine has been available since the 1980s and, in 1991, doctors began recommending that children in the United States receive the hepatitis B vaccine. The annual rate of acute hepatitis B infections went down 88.5 percent between 1982 and 2015.12 In 2017, the annual number of hepatitis B infections rose in some states.13 Experts think the rise was related to increases in injection drug use. Injection drug use increases the risk of hepatitis B infection.

Speaking Out About Hepatitis C

Phillip Baldwin was diagnosed with HIV and hepatitis C at 24. Now he’s an activist for HIV, hepatitis and human rights issues. Story courtesy of the World Hepatitis Alliance.

I was just 24 years old when I was diagnosed with HIV and hepatitis C.

I was diagnosed with HIVduring alunch break from work, then a week later I was told I also had hepatitis C. It came as a complete shock, and this double whammy had a huge impact on my life. I felt fear, shame, grief, and anger. I had no physical symptoms of hepatitis. I had been accessing STI testing from the age of 17 and always aimed to have safe sex.

Because I was tested regularly, this meantthe viruses were diagnosed early on and I was able to access treatment as soon as possible. Emotionally, though, hepatitis C had a huge impact on me and I felt the stigma of my diagnosis acutely.

Having been diagnosed with HIV and hepatitis C, I had to deal with the dual stigma of being co-infected. I felt alienated from HIV-negative men on account of my HIV, and I felt alienated from HIV-positive men on account of my hepatitis C. I didnt know where or how to fit in. I felt isolated. I really did feel that I was alone.

Though it took meyears to come to terms with my hepatitis C, once I had achieved it, I really wanted to speak out because there is a real lack of awareness around the virus. In 2014, I started writing for theHuffpostand,in 2015, I left my job as a lawyer inLondon to concentrate full-time on my activism.

Natural Remedies And Hepatitis B

When we get sick, we want to get well quickly. Some of us turn to our doctors first, while others may try home remedies or alternative medicine. Many of us do both.

Natural medicine means that no chemicals, drugs or surgeries are used to help you get well. Alternative medicine is simply an alternative to conventional medicine. For instance, in the U.S., ancient healing practices, such as faith healing, Chinese medicine or seeing a curandero are alternatives. So are naturopathy, homeopathy, and herbal medicine. Integrative medicine uses both. Its common for people to use more than one healing method.

In the U.S., we have access to many alternatives, and we tend to apply Western medical concepts to natural medicine. This is most evident in our use of supplements. When diagnosed with hepatitis B, we may want to take something that will help the liver, such as a supplement or herb. Its easier to take something than it is to exercise and eat right. However, everything passes through the liver, and just because herbs and supplements are natural, they arent necessarily safe.

Despite claims on the Internet, no natural remedy has been proven to cure hepatitis B. There may be remedies that improve symptoms associated with hep B, but none has permanently eradicated the virus. There isnt a large body of research on natural remedies and hepatitis B much of what we know is anecdotal, meaning that people tell others about their experiences.

Is Hepatitis B Curable

Theres no cure for hepatitis B. The good news is it usually goes away by itself in 4 to 8 weeks. More than 9 out of 10 adults who get hepatitis B totally recover.

However, about 1 in 20 people who get hepatitis B as adults become carriers, which means they have a chronic hepatitis B infection. Carriers are more likely to pass hepatitis B to other people. Most carriers are contagious meaning they can spread hepatitis B for the rest of their lives.

Hepatitis B infections that last a long time may lead to serious liver diseases like cirrhosis and liver cancer. About 1 in 5 people with chronic hepatitis B die from it. There are medicines that can help treat chronic hepatitis B infections.

Most babies who get hepatitis B during birth develop chronic infection, unless they get treated right away. But treatments are almost always effective if your baby gets them quickly. Thats why its important for pregnant people to get tested for hepatitis B.

The Patient-Doctor Journey: Hep C Cure

If you are pregnant and have hepatitis B, talk with your doctor about lowering the risk that the infection will spread to your baby. Your doctor will check your virus levels during pregnancy. If virus levels are high, your doctor may recommend treatment during pregnancy to lower virus levels and reduce the chance that hepatitis B will spread to your baby. Your doctor may refer you to a liver specialist to find out if you need hepatitis B treatment and to check for liver damage.

When it is time to give birth, tell the doctor and staff who deliver your baby that you have hepatitis B. A health care professional should give your baby the hepatitis B vaccine and HBIG right after birth. The vaccine and HBIG will greatly reduce the chance of your baby getting the infection.

How Is Acute Hepatitis B Treated

Acute hepatitis B doesnt always require treatment. In most cases, a doctor will recommend monitoring your symptoms and getting regular blood tests to determine whether the virus is still in your body.

While you recover, allow your body to rest and drink plenty of fluids to help your body fight off the infection. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as ibuprofen , to help with any abdominal pain you have.

See a doctor if your symptoms are severe or seem to be getting worse. You may need to take a prescription antiviral medication to avoid potential liver damage.

Like acute hepatitis B, chronic hepatitis B may not require medical treatment to avoid permanent liver damage. In some patients, monitoring symptoms and getting regular liver tests is appropriate.

Treatment generally involves antiviral medications, such as:

  • peginterferon alfa-2a injections
  • antiviral tablets, such as tenofovir or entecavir

Antiviral medications can help to reduce symptoms and prevent liver damage. But they rarely completely get rid of the hepatitis B virus. Instead, the goal of treatment is to have the lowest viral load possible. Viral load refers to the amount of a virus in a blood sample.

Theres no cure for hepatitis B, but the condition is easily preventable by taking a few precautions. Hepatitis B is often spread through sexual contact, shared needles, and accidental needle sticks.
