Liver disease can be a slow and insidious process. Dogs that are overweight, suffer from diabetes, or have reoccurring episodes of pancreatitis are most susceptible. Inappropriate diets and inadequate antioxidant function by the liver are the usual causes behind the onset of fatty liver disease and cirrhosis.

Chicken liver flavored to help the medicine go down, these chews are comprised of 15 different ingredients that help support liver function. It works in two phases of detoxification: the first phase helps convert toxins in the liver into less damaging matter, and the second converts those substances into water-soluble chemicals that can be more easily expelled by the body.

The Best Dog Supplements For Liver Disease

Canine liver disease in common in dogs. Some breeds are more susceptible than others, but it is considered one of the top 5 causes of non-accidental death in dogs. The liver is meant to clean the body by removing toxins and waste products and aid in digestion. When the liver is not functioning properly, the toxins and waste can build up, causing dysfunction of other body systems.

The Detoxification Process In The Liver Occurs In Two Phases

It is important to understand the two phases of detoxification and the specific kinds of toxins we intend to remove from the body.

The liver transforms fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble form so they can be released through the kidneys , skin , sweat glands, and into the bile . How does the liver do this?

Phase 1 of detoxification is very complex and includes oxidation-reduction and hydrolysis reactions. The process is catalyzed by enzymes classified as P-450, which reside in the liver cells. Generally, these enzymes are triggered by exogenous toxins, releasing a mechanism that safeguards and protects.

After the fat toxins are converted to water-soluble compounds and processed in Phase 2, they are eliminated from the body in the form of feces, urine or sweat.

Certain herbs, vitamins and antioxidants have proven to play an important role in supporting both liver function and detoxification. Understanding which supplements support Phase1 and Phase 2 will enhance your therapeutic results.

Disorders Of The Liver And Gallbladder In Dogs

, BS, DVM, DACVIM, Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University

The liver is an organ that performs numerous functions. It has a large storage capacity and functional reserve and is capable of regenerating. These properties provide some protection against permanent damage. However, the liver is also susceptible to injury because of its role in metabolizing, detoxifying, and storing various toxic compounds.

Signs that a dog has liver disease can vary and include loss of appetite, vomiting, stomach ulceration, diarrhea, seizures or other neurologic problems, fever, blood clotting problems, jaundice , fluid collection in the abdomen, excessive urination and thirst, changes in liver size, and weight loss. Gastrointestinal bleeding can be seen in animals with liver disease due to ulcers or problems with blood clotting. The veterinarians understanding of the potential causes of each of these signs helps him or her to diagnose illness and provide appropriate treatment.

Other Effects On Cellular Signaling

In cancer cells, silybin alters cell cycle regulators and induces apoptosis, both through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and through the inhibition of growth factor receptor-mediated mitogenic and cell survival signaling, particularly related to the activation of tyrosine kinases. PDGF receptor , epidermal growth factor receptor , Bcr-Abl, and KIT are examples of tyrosine kinases overexpressed in most human cancers. Silymarin or silybin are particularly effective in inhibiting EGFR signaling with suppression of cyclin-dependent kinase expression and up regulation of CDK inhibitors . These effects lead to G1 and G2-M arrest in cancer cells, as recently confirmed in a model of human colon cancer. In fact, at a dose ranging from 40-75 mol/L, silybin significantly inhibited cell proliferation through cell cycle arrest via inhibition of cyclin promoter activity.

Because it inhibits constitutive NF-B activation, silybin can induce apoptosis, consistent with a significant decrease in its nuclear level of p65 subunit. In addition, it activates caspase 3 and caspase 9 and decreases survivin levels.

Table summarizes the main cellular signaling affected by silybin.

Side Effects From Common Flea And Tick Products

Isoxazoline based products used for prevention and treatment of fleas, ticks, and mites are gaining popularity. Many traditional veterinarians are strongly recommending the use of the isoxazoline class of products. Unfortunately, as the number of animals being given these products has risen, so has the number of pet owners reporting neurological and other adverse reactions.

What side effects are possible when using these drugs?

Neurological side effects or adverse reactions can range from barely noticeable to severe. Adverse reactions to these compounds appear to affect animals randomly, although those with certain chronic diseases, the young and elderly, and animals that are immune-compromised or have the genetic mutation of the MDR1 gene seem to be at higher risk. A survey of pet owners showed that adverse reactions are common.

Some adverse reactions that my clients have seen include:

  • Aggression

What should I do if I believe my pet is having an adverse reaction?

topical

Some pet parents have continued these supplements for longer periods of time with no adverse effects if the pet is still experiencing symptoms. If your pet is experiencing seizures, I have additional suggestions.

Report the incident to the FDA and the manufacturer!

Rupture Of The Gallbladder Or Bile Duct

Rupture of the gallbladder or bile duct is most often due to gallstone obstruction, inflammation of the gallbladder, or blunt trauma. Rupture of the bile duct may also occur as a result of cancer or certain parasites. Rupture leads to leakage of bile into the abdomen, causing a serious condition called bile peritonitis, which may be fatal if the rupture is not repaired. Treatment includes surgery, which consists of placing a stent in the bile duct, removing the gallbladder, or connecting the gallbladder with the small intestine.

    Types

Hepatic failure may happen suddenly or develop slowly. My Benji And I Need Advice

We had a lot of blood work done. Much was good but some was not. Cholesterol is somewhat of a problem but the liver is the big concern. It has been somewhat elevated for sometime. The vet has prescribed Hepato support capsules. He has been taking 2 a day for a long time. Also he takes potassium citrate for urine crystals â had to have surgery a couple of years ago for a bladder stone. He is also on thyroid meds. His Liver ALT is now 171. In March it was 123. 100 is normal

His other liver test should be between 23 and 212 and in March it was 840. Now it is 1389

We are presently feeding him Hillâs prescription U/D food â 1 1/4 cups a day and 8 large kibbles of Hills prescription T/D food, He also gets glucosomine and aquafresh in his water, thyroid meds and prescription tooth paste. The thyroid test was fine and so were the other tests. He has been drinking much more water than usual as well.

The vet is away right now but the staff is asking Hills what other diet that he could have and still be able to take the Pottassium citrate. He will let us know in a few days.

Iâve read on the internet that this could be caused by a trauma. He has not been hit by a car but he has fallen several times recently while going upstairs and landed very, very hard on his abdomen area.

I also notice that eating wild mushrooms can cause a problem. We did have quite a few in the yard awhile ago but I tried to get rid of them all. I doubt if he got any but canât be sure.

    Side Effects Of Zentonil

While Zentonil is considered safe for use, some pets may show signs of vomiting. If the vomiting lasts for more than a day, you must seek medical care. Besides this, the supplement may have certain drug interactions when combined with a few medications or over the counter drugs. To prevent this from happening you must keep your vet informed about all other medications that you are giving your pet even if theyre herbal remedies or homeopathic preparations.

Since Zentonil is nutrient supplement and not a medication, it doesnt have to undergo strict testing. Therefore the product may not have standardized production. Its thus best to buy it from the vet to protect your dogs health.

The Use Of Silybin In The Clinical Setting: Efficacy And Suggestions

The use of silymarin in the clinical setting has a long history in its native Mediterranean region, it has been employed for liver damage since the Greco-Roman era. As mentioned in the introduction, herbal therapy use is consistently increasing worldwide, and some of the most common herbal supplement preparations are derived from the milk thistle plant . Despite a long history of its use and the large number of people who consume this substance, no conclusive data on its clinical efficacy can be identified. In fact, only a few well designed clinical trials have been performed. Most studies have been conducted using silymarin and with inclusion of patients with alcoholic or viral cirrhosis. Stickel et al identified the 10 main controlled trials conducted in liver patients, with numbers of patients ranging from 20 to 200 and doses of silymarin ranging from 210 to 450 mg/d for 7 to 730 d. These clinical studies generally have suffered from the same shortcomings found in many other trials on herbal medicines, such as a small sample size, lack of appropriate randomization and of allocation concealment or blinding, very different periods of treatment, lack of information about type and dose of extract used as well as product characterization, ill-defined patient population, and a lack of etiology, severity of disease, and discussion of potential confounders.
