If anemia is present, this is usually non-regenerative, although intestinal bleeding secondary to a coagulopathy can also occur. Microcytosis is frequently seen with portosystemic shunts. Royal Canin Hepatic Dog Food Recalls

Royal Canin Mobility Veterinary Diet

This company has a surprisingly small number of recalls. Once, the company was sued by pet owners that claimed too-high levels of vitamin D in Royal Canin food made their dog seriously ill. In the end, the lawsuit was thrown out because they could not directly tie the food to the deaths and sicknesses.

However, the company later recalled some of their foods because of too-high levels of vitamin D. It was evidentially an error on the part of their vitamin mix distributer. They no longer use that distributer.

There have been a lot of other controversies as well, even if it doesnt have to do with their food. For instance, they were once caught sponsoring a competition for bull baiting. However, the company further said that they didnt know about the event, so it may be that a lone representative sponsored it without their knowledge.

Either way, this company is not without its surprises.

The liver has several vital functions. It stores nutrients, detoxifies the blood and helps to regulate circulation and body temperature. In particular, it makes bile, a liquid that is necessary for fat digestion in the intestines. Bile is stored in the gallbladder and enters the duodenum via the bile duct. The liver is also responsible for storing copper and then excreting it in the bile.

For Vets: How And When To Use Prescription Hepatic Diets

Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Lata Hepatic

We often find that vets have questions about when to recommend prescription hepatic diets, so here’s a quick overview – I hope it’s helpful.

What commercial hepatic diets are available in Australia and New Zealand?

In Australia and New Zealand, the two main options for dogs are Hill’s Prescription Diet l/d canned and dry, and Royal Canin Hepatic canned and dry. Let’s do a quick comparison of the dry diets :

Hill’s Prescription Diet l/d dry diet:

14% calories from protein

Copper: 1.1 mg per 1000 kcal ME

Royal Canin Hepatic dry diet:

15.7% calories from protein

3.91 kcal/gram

Copper: 0.77 mg per 1000 kcal ME

As you can see, both diets are quite similar. Both are high in fat to help with weight maintenance, both are copper-restricted, and both are low in protein. Both canned diets are high in moisture, which may help to reduce the risk of ammonium urate urolithiasis secondary to reduced hepatic function.

What is available for a cat with a portosystemic shunt?

Not much, unfortunately – although cases are quite rare, so it makes sense that commercial options are limited. Hill’s previously manufactured l/d feline, although that was discontinued some time ago. A low protein, prescription renal diet is likely the best option for an adult cat – growing kittens with a shunt may need a properly formulated, home-prepared therapeutic diet.

When should I recommend a prescription hepatic diet for a pet?

To summarise, there are only really two indications to prescribe a hepatic diet:

Basic Principles Of Liver Enzymology

Most methods used to measure enzyme levels are based on the calculation of their activity. The enzyme unit is the amount of an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of one mol of substrate per minute 1. Ranges vary between laboratories and methodologies, and when comparing results it must always be in relation to the magnitude of the increase and not simply with absolute numbers. Additionally, remember that hemolysis, jaundice, or lipemia can alter the sample results, depending on the analytical method used.

The magnitude of the increase in enzyme activity tends to be in proportion to the severity of liver damage however such tests do not predict liver function, the cause of the problem, or the prognosis. For example, where there is advanced illness such as cirrhosis, the increase in liver enzymes may be slight. Likewise, the duration of any increase depends mainly on the average half-life of the enzyme, the cause of the damage, and the severity of the process. Because of this, a single measurement rarely provides enough information for the clinician, and serial monitoring is much more revealing. Any increase in liver enzymes can be graded into 3 stages 2:

  • Mild:< 5 times the upper limit of the reference range
  • Moderate: 5-10 times the upper limit of the reference range
  • Severe:> 10 times the upper limit of the reference range
